I've got a boondoggle for ya...

Here is the loop that Car and Driver uses for their annual 10Best Awards. It's near Pinckney/Hell Michigan (no joke... there is a Hell, Michigan). We use this loop for ride and handling tests sometimes. It has a variety of road surfaces, hills, sweeping turns through the woods, and the speed limit is 55 mph for most of it.

These are by far the funnest roads to drive in the Metro Detroit area. Here are the directions:

* Take US23 to North Territorial
* Head West on North Territorial for about 15 miles
* Turn right on Hankerd Road (this is the start of the loop)
* Hankerd dead ends on Glenbrook Road, turn left
* Glenbrook dead ends on Patterson Lake Road, turn left
* Patterson dead ends on Doyle Road, turn left
* Travel about 1 mile on Doyle, then left on Unadilla Road
* Take Unadilla road through town (road will jog, but stay on the pavement. Watch your speed through town, it's only 25 mph here)
* Unadilla road turns into Hadley road through town
* Hadley will take you all the way back to North Territorial
* Turn left on North Territorial, and Hankerd Road will be about 1/2 mile down

Try the loop boths directions, but I prefer counter-clockwise starting at Hankerd. Once you do the loop a couple times, you'll have it memorized and it's very easy.

Just watch out for bikers (pedal, not Harley) on Hankerd road becuase there is a park there. Also keep your eyes peeled for 5-0 if you have a speed fetish. It's rare to see them, but they are out sometimes. In any case, you can have a blast just doing the speed limit or 5 over.

Perhaps we could plan a meet out there???

That is an awesome idea! I would be down for it. If you have a time in mind Gary set it up in the Calendar! We could use the park to BBQ too!

Is anyone interested in doing this sometime this fall? I think it would be great to do on a Saturday afternoon. We could plan on meeting @ Karls Cabin Restaurant @ a certain time, complete the route and meet back @ Karls for dinner!

Karl Cabin ins on 6005 Gotfredson Road Plymouth, Michigan | Phone: 734.455.8450 | www.KarlsCabin.com

Count me in, I've driven this loop many times, the scenary is awesome in the fall. Someone take the reins on this meet and get it going! There are forums and car groups heading up to Hell all the time for this drive... I've often reffered to it as "Michigans Dragon". (Incase those are not familiar, there is the famous "Dragon" run in Deals Gap- which is by far the best drive/ test of you r vehicle in the country I think.)

Do you happen to know how long it takes to do the complete loop?

We use that loop all the time for work. If fact, I just drove it this Wednesday. It takes 20 minutes to do a loop. There is another South loop that we add which isn't as twisty, but is smooth and adds a few straighter sections. The South loop adds ten minutes.

At work, we do driver rotations at the gas station/general store on the corner of N. Territorial and Hadley (bottom left corner of the map that is cut off). They have a full deli and serve pizza and hot/cold sandwiches as well as normal convenience store stuff. They have about four big picnic tables outside. Or we can eat at a real restaurant like Andy suggested.

The loop is about a one hour drive from Dearborn and probably about 40-45 minutes from Novi.

Nissan, Ford, Chrysler, GM and Car & Driver all use the loop for testing. It's not the greatest, but it's better than anything else we have around here. Parts of it are actually getting pretty bumpy with lots of cold patch repairs. It is very pretty in the fall, but can get a bit slick from fallen leaves.

Early October might be a good time to do this. Late September is the Z Nationals in Cleveland, so we should avoid those two weekends (last in Sept/first in Oct). Mid September would work, but it's only a few weeks away and we need time for people to find this thread and schedule with their families.
